2012 RECAP!

What happened last year in 2012? There were so many that it's often difficult to distill everything down without acknowledging each significance or contribution to the 'grand scheme of things', if you will. However, we felt that there were a few that stood out most for us, and we're excited to see whether these notable mentions will unfold into more interesting future outcomes. We've listed them according to order of importance and also address why we felt they were relevant in their influence over the industry. Hope you enjoy it!

Luxology & The Foundry merger

The Foundry buys Luxology! This came as a big surprise because on the surface, the modo 601 launch looked to be a huge success...so why would Luxology let itself be sold? That's a question for Brad Peebler, former CEO of Luxology and now downgraded to “President of the Americas”.  On the flip side though, this “merger” has the potential to de-throne Autodesk's monopoly over 3D and 2D applications. We will just have to see how things pan out!

Apple Retina Display

Why Retina Display? Because it's the beginning of the 4K resolution. Of course not everyone jumps on board, because most of us don't shit gold bricks. But for those who can afford it, that means new displays (for PC and TV) that support 3840x2160, faster processors and graphics cards to crunch all of that detail, higher resolution assets for game and film titles

Lucasfilm bought by Disney

This pretty much signals the end of an era in CGI because George Lucas was synonymous with that. Before Star Wars came out, we were basically in the stone ages, as far as visual effects was concerned. There was simply nothing like it and George Lucas was the guy who made all of that reality. Thanks to him, we have Photoshop (Photoshop was developed by an ILM supervisor and his brother, which was later sold to Adobe) and one could say this whole industry, whether it's hardware+software developers or VFX studios... All these things came as a result of that.  Say goodbye to its legacy now that everything is under Disney! Time makes it easy to forget the past...and this is no exception.

Blender 2.65 Release

Blender has been around for over 10 years now, so why does v2.65 matter?  It's actually like this - there has been an incredible amount of development in the 2.00× releases. Everything from improvements on 'basic' modeling tools (bevel, inset, etc.) to B-Mesh (a radically new way to quickly model organic surfaces which are almost always the trickiest), to new fire and smoke simulation sans particle system, to Cycles render and new shading nodes, and the list just goes on. Blender development is constantly happening, whether it's in the form of Add-ons or community voting to fully integrate features into the next build. Every new feature or update makes sense because they are usually things that are requested by the every-day user.  And as someone who is looking for tools that save you time, there is nowhere better to look at than Blender. The rate at which tools are being developed, and the quality of the tools...Blender stands shoulder-to-shoulder with packages like Maya and 3ds Max...if not taller. Things can only get better for Blender development, especially when you keep in mind that the bulk of programmers who are writing these new tools are doing it for FREE. Scary times ahead for commercial software developers!

Kickstarter

Ok, if you don't know what Kickstarter is, you should stop reading now. For everyone else, this crowd-funding is the shit! Everything from hardware (VR-ready Oculus, Ouya), software (Spriter), to games (Double Fine, Larry Leisure) and animation (The Goon!) is getting money and support from people across the globe. Nothing like the power of regular people, collectively voting to make cool things happen. Too bad this doesn't apply for governments/world orders
