Houdini Indie & Houdini Engine Indie on the Unity Asset Store
Side Effects Software, an industry leader in procedural modeling, animation and visual effects software, is proud to announce the availability of Houdini Indie and Houdini Engine Indie on the Unity Asset Store. Independent game makers can now enjoy the power of Houdini’s procedural node-based workflow under a limited commercial license.
“Side Effects promises to bring a really unique way of creating content to the Unity community,” says Caitlyn Meeks, GM & Co-Founder of the Asset Store at Unity Technologies. “With Houdini Indie and Houdini Engine Indie, Unity developers have an incredibly powerful toolbox of procedural modeling tools at their fingertips... the nature of the product and its highly procedural workflow makes it easy to create a wide variety of content in a short time. If you'd like to see the future of game content creation, look no further, this is the start of something enormous.”
Houdini Indie includes the same features as the commercial version of Houdini FX and can be used in all stages of game production such as creating prototypes, level building, procedural modeling and environment detailing. Houdini Indie includes FBX import and export with no polygon limits and can package up node networks into Houdini Digital Assets that retain their procedural nature.
Pricing and Availability
Houdini Indie is available today from the Unity Asset Store for $199 USD yearly while Houdini Engine Indie is available for $99 USD yearly. ProTrack is available for $99 on its own or bundled with one year of Houdini Engine Indie for $159. The Houdini Engine for Unity plug-in is currently available for developers working with Unity 4.5 on 32-bit Windows. Support for 64-bit Windows and OSX is only available for Unity 5 beta testers.
Commercial use of Houdini Indie and Houdini Engine Indie is limited to studios or artists that make less than $100K USD per year. Houdini Indie cannot be used in the same pipeline as commercial versions of Houdini and you can only have three Houdini Indie’s and three Houdini Engine Indie’s per studio. Houdini Indie uses its own file format for saving scenes and assets and is restricted to 1920x1080 when rendering out animations using Houdini’s physically-based renderer Mantra.
Houdini Indie also includes access to the Houdini Engine which can be used to load these Houdini Digital Assets directly into the Unity® editor where game makers can use high-level parameters to achieve custom results. For artists that don’t need to author their own assets, a standalone Houdini Engine Indie license can be used to load assets created in Houdini Indie or existing assets such as ProTrack.
“ProTrack is the first procedural ready-to-roll track and terrain system created using the Houdini Digital Asset technology,” says Noah Kaarbo, Designer, IndePro and Kenny Lammers, Programmer, IndiePro. “ProTrack uses the Houdini Engine to empower game makers to rapidly create and edit live track environments inside Unity that can be immediately played with any controller.”
From the same people who created ProTrack comes Gametutor which offers video courses that teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced developers how to create powerful Houdini Digital Assets for use inside Unity.
