We at Clustr, wish you all the best in 2015!! May the new year bring in good things and for those who had a particularly shitty time in 2014, we wish that this year will have some normality - at the very least. There are a few notable things to look forward to...seeing what happens with The Carlyle Group and The Foundry, Pixologic ZBrush 4R7 release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Windows 10, new software releases (Blender, 3DCoat, Houdini, MODO, and others), Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, No Man's Sky, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Inside, new Terraria update, new hardware+gadgets... We can't wait for what this new year brings :-)
Rohan Dalvi has created a 2-part video tutorial series on making procedural textures in Houdini (at a ghastly $25 per part pricing, what is there to think about?! and comes with scene files). We don't know about you, but the job boards have been filled lately with more Houdini artist positions, so it may be worthwhile to check out. See the preview video of the quality of textures that Rohan creates and judge for yourself.
Here is another alternative for your photo/graphics editor needs: PhotoLine, an all-purpose image and graphics editor. You can enhance photos, export pictures for web pages, or create PDF files for printing. And PhotoLine is offering everything, that is required for professional work: CMYK and lab color space, color management with ICC profiles, adjustment layers, and 16/32 bit depth per color channel. Aside from that you can import, edit and export vector graphics and PDF files.
MoI users, version 3 is now out (been for some time now, but we didn't realize it till now..thought it was still beta)! Lots of nice new improvements like Deform Flow/Twist, more Extrude options, NSided hole filling, added Loft options, Booolean subset operations, and more!
Swedish visual effects and digital animation studio Important Looking Pirates, have published a breakdown of the work they did in "Crossbones", which was done with Maya, V-Ray, and Houdini.
